Firearm Training FAQ

Where are classes held?

Every class runs at Rooftop Shooting Range, an 11-acre outdoor tactical range in Trenton, TX, about 25 minutes north of McKinney. Students come from Dallas, Frisco, Plano, Celina, Prosper, Allen and across North Texas. Training happens in our ten 40-yard outdoor tactical bays, so you can move, draw and shoot in ways an indoor lane won't allow.

I've never shot a pistol. Is there a class for me?

Yes. Women can start with Ladies Intro to Pistol Foundations, which assumes no experience at all. Anyone can also book a private lesson to learn safe handling one on one. The Performance Pistol series is built for shooters who already know basic safe handling.

Do I need my own pistol?

Most classes expect you to bring your own pistol, at least two magazines, a gun belt and magazine pouches. No pistol? Firearm rentals are available for private lessons at $50 per firearm. Add one in the Firearm Rental menu when you book a private lesson. Rentals are not offered for group classes, but for Ladies Intro to Pistol Foundations a borrowed pistol is fine. Reach out to the instructor ahead of time so they can help you sort out equipment.

What should I bring?

Eye and ear protection are required. Bring your pistol, magazines and the ammunition listed on the class page (usually 150 to 350 rounds), plus closed-toe shoes, a hat, sunscreen, water and snacks. We're outdoors, so dress for the forecast. Need more ammo, or would rather buy it here? Our pro shop sells 9mm and .223 ammunition.

How long are the classes?

Group classes are half-day sessions of about four hours, usually 9 AM to 1 PM. Private lessons start at two hours, and you can book longer blocks.

Do you offer women-only classes?

Yes. Jenn Tang teaches three women's courses: Intro to Pistol Foundations for first-time shooters, Pistol Fundamentals for newer shooters, and Concealed Carry Concepts.

What if I can't make my class?

Class fees are non-refundable, but if you can't attend, your payment turns into a credit you can use toward a future class. See each class page for the full policy.

Do you teach tactics or CQB?

No, and we want to be upfront about that. Our classes focus on practical shooting: marksmanship, gun handling and efficient movement.

One of our core beliefs is that before you start exploring tactics, you should have an extremely strong understanding of the core fundamentals. When the fundamentals are automatic, your brain is free to process everything else that CQB, VCQB and other tactical applications demand. Learning tactics without strong practical skills can actually be a detriment to a student. Ideally you want both, and a solid fundamental foundation comes first.

Do you offer rifle or shotgun training?

Yes. Andy Dang teaches private lessons in pistol, rifle and shotgun, built around your goals and skill level. Book a private lesson with Andy.

Can I give a class as a gift?

Yes. A Rooftop gift card works for classes, range admission and more.
