The Four Firearm Safety Rules

  1. 1ALWAYS treat every firearm as if it is loaded and dangerous.
  2. 2ALWAYS keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Never point a firearm at anything you are not prepared to destroy.
  3. 3ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger and on the frame until you are ready to fire.
  4. 4ALWAYS know your target and what is around and beyond it.

Steel Target Rules — Tac Bays

  1. 1Do not shoot steel targets with M855 / M855A1 “green tip,” 7N6, bi-metal jacketed, mild steel-core penetrators, or any penetrator-type ammunition. This is extremely dangerous and strictly prohibited.
  2. 2Rifle calibers: minimum 30-yard engagement distance on steel. Pistol calibers: minimum 10-yard engagement distance on steel.
  3. 3Shotgun restrictions on steel: birdshot minimum 15 yards | buckshot minimum 20 yards | slugs minimum 30 yards.
  4. 4No calibers larger than .223 / 5.56 on steel targets in the tac bays.
  5. 5Do not shoot the dueling tree or plate rack with rifle calibers, buckshot, or slugs. (If it is a circular piece of steel, do not engage with any rifle caliber.)

General Range Rules

  1. 1High PriorityDo not break the 180° rule. The muzzle must never swing past the firing line. When moving uprange, keep the muzzle pointed completely up, down, or downrange.
  2. 2High PriorityALL non-members must complete a waiver and pay admission before every visit — no exceptions, zero tolerance. Anyone found shooting without a completed waiver or payment will be permanently banned.
  3. 3High PriorityMembers are fully responsible for their guests. If a guest violates any range rule, the sponsoring member may also be banned for failing to set proper expectations and supervise their guest.
  4. 4High PriorityRate-enhancing/rate-increasing devices (e.g., force reset triggers, super safeties, and similar) are permitted on the range, but must be used within 20 yards of a backstop or berm. This is a training range — periodic use of these devices is fine, but continuous, back-to-back mag dumping with these devices offers no training value and is not allowed. These devices are strictly prohibited in the rifle bay.
  5. 5Eye and ear protection are required at all times on the shooting bays — even when not shooting.
  6. 6Alcohol and drugs are strictly prohibited. Firearms and impairment do not mix.
  7. 7Children under 12 are not permitted to shoot or stand on the firing line.
  8. 8All individuals under 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  9. 9No negligent or accidental discharges. Period.
  10. 10Do not fire rounds over any berm or short of any berm. Rounds landing short of a berm are prone to ricocheting and can travel over the berm.
  11. 11No hip-firing, overhead shooting, or any method that bypasses proper aim.
  12. 12No dragon’s breath, tracers, incendiary, or other exploding/specialty ammunition.
  13. 13Caliber restrictions: maximum 30-06. Magnum rifle cartridges are not permitted — including 7 PRC, 7mm Mag, .300 Win Mag, .300 Norma, .338 Lapua, .50 BMG, and similar.
  14. 14No mag dumping.
  15. 15No flashbangs, breaching charges, explosives, or pyrotechnic devices.
  16. 16No clay pigeons. Do not attempt to shoot airborne targets.
  17. 17No explosive or reactive targets such as Tannerite, Firebird, or similar products.
  18. 18All movable targets must be placed within 10 yards of a berm to prevent ricochets.
  19. 19Do not bring trash or improvised targets (car hoods, appliances, etc.) to the range.
  20. 20Appropriate attire required: shirt, pants or shorts, and closed-toe shoes.
  21. 21Members may shoot from the bench in the rifle bay without passing the rifle bay qualification test. Any other shooting position — standing, barricades, rooftop, kneeling, or otherwise off the bench — requires a passed rifle bay qualification test to ensure minimum marksmanship standards are met. Non-members may only access the rifle bay when accompanied by a qualified member.

Enforcement Policy

  1. 1You agreed to these rules at the time of purchase or membership signup. At every visit, a verbal overview is provided covering the most critical firearm safety rules, key range rules, and the most commonly broken rules — but that overview does not cover everything. It is the responsibility of all participants to read, know, and abide by every rule in this document.
  2. 2These rules exist to protect people, not to preserve equipment. Our highest priority as Rooftop Shooting Range staff is making sure everyone on this range — and anyone beyond it — is safe and nobody gets hurt.
  3. 3Violation of any rule will result in immediate removal and a lifetime ban — no warnings, no refunds. This document is your one and only warning.
  4. 4Members are responsible for every single one of their guests. If a guest is irresponsible and breaks any rule, the member’s membership is subject to indefinite revocation. Teach your guests safety and share these rules with them before coming out to shoot.
  5. 5Negligence resulting in property damage or injury — including projectiles leaving range property — may result in criminal charges and civil liability.

Range Courtesies

  • Respect “cease fire” calls. Immediately stop shooting, unload, open actions, and step away from firearms during a cease-fire period.
  • Dispose of your trash correctly and clean up your shooting area before leaving. Leave the range better than you found it.
  • Reset the bays after use.
  • Be patient, especially during peak hours. Respect other shooters’ time and space.
  • If you see someone unfamiliar with range procedures, offer to help and guide them.
  • If you have concerns about safety or behavior, report it to the range staff or officers calmly and respectfully.
  • If you notice or cause something to be broken, inform the range staff so the feature can be fixed or removed for the safety and benefit of other participants.
  • Minimize “picnicking” in the shooting bays. If you are not actively training, please make the bay available for others to train.
  • The rifle range is a shared bay unless reserved for larger groups, training classes, competitions, or other scheduled events.
  • Adhering to these courtesies fosters a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone using the shooting range.
